Chapter 26

When Dennis Jr. showed up at Hayley’s restaurant with a delivery of fresh lobsters for her seafood pasta that was on her specials board that evening, he seemed preoccupied. He carried the styrofoam container into the kitchen, slammed it down on the counter, and shoved a paper in front of Hayley to sign confirming her receipt of the order. Hayley had tried to make small talk but Dennis Jr. was not having it.

“See ya,” he said with a slight wave.

“Dennis, wait, I was hoping you could stay just for a minute. I just need to ask you about—”

“Sorry, I have an appointment I need to get to, Aunt Hayley, gotta go,” Dennis Jr. said, marching out the back door to his truck in the parking lot.

She chased after him, but by the time she caught up to him, he was already behind the wheel of the truck with the engine chugging to life.

“Could we meet up later, maybe for a drink at Drinks Like A Fish, it’s kind of important?”

He anxiously checked his watch. “Yeah, maybe, I’ll text you.”

Before she could get out another word, he was squealing away and she got pelted by some flying bits of gravel. Hayley turned around to go back inside when her phone pinged. She checked the screen.

It was a text from Mona. Turn around and get in.

Hayley spun around in time to see Mona pulling up in her white Ford pickup truck.

“Mona, you just missed Dennis Jr., he was here delivering—”

Mona cut her off. “I know, I know, I’ve been tailing him all day.”

Hayley raised an eyebrow. “You what?”

“I just gotta find out who this mystery woman is. Come on, get in before we lose him!”

Hayley knew her hostess, Betty, would be arriving momentarily so she would not be abandoning her restaurant, so without pausing to even think about the consequences, she hopped in the passenger’s side of the truck and Mona roared off in hot pursuit of Dennis Jr.

“Do you really think this is a good idea, keeping your own son under surveillance?” Hayley asked.

Mona kept her eyes glued on Dennis Jr.’s truck just ahead of them. “Hayley, sometimes desperate situations require desperate measures!”

“How is Dennis Jr.’s dating life a desperate situation?”

“Maybe it’s not for him, but it certainly is for me. I don’t like my kids hiding things from me. I need to know. Otherwise, I’ll drive myself crazy!”

Too late.

Dennis Jr. drove out of town on Eagle Lake Road.

Mona allowed a car to pass her so they were not directly behind Dennis Jr’s truck where he could easily spot them through his rearview mirror.

Hayley started to get a sinking feeling.

“Mona . . .”

“Look, if you don’t approve of what we’re doing, I can pull over right now and leave you on the side of the road and pick you up on my way back!”

“No, I’ll ride shotgun, it’s just that . . .”

“What, Hayley, what?”

“I think I know where we’re going and you’re not going to like it,” Hayley mumbled.

Mona cranked her head around toward Hayley.
